Officials of the Tax and Customs Police Department of the State Revenue Service (SRS), in co-operation with the State Border Guard, discovered an illegal storage of tobacco products in Kurzeme.
In September 2020, officials of the SRS Tax and Customs Police Department, during a search of a hangar in Kurzeme, discovered that tobacco products were illegally stored there. Approximately 10 tonnes of fine-cut tobacco, 14 tonnes of tobacco leaves, 500 liters of diesel and a tobacco shredder were removed during the search.
If the tobacco products had been sold on the market, according to the initial calculations, the state would have suffered losses in the form of unpaid excise duty in the amount of not less than 1.8 million euros.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against five persons born in 1977, 1967, 1969, 1999 and 2002 in the SRS Tax and Customs Police Department for the established criminal offense.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated according to the features of the criminal offense provided for in Section 221 (3) of the Criminal Law regarding illegal storage of tobacco products, if it has been committed in a large amount.
According to Section 19 of the Criminal Procedure Law, no person shall be considered guilty until his or her guilt in committing a criminal offense has been established in accordance with the procedures specified in the Criminal Procedure Law.
