Electronic customs (e-customs) is one of the most important projects of the European Union (EU) customs policy. The aim of the project implementation is to increase the level of security in international trade and to facilitate completion of customs formalities as much as possible, accelerating the movement of goods across the borders of the Union and reducing administrative costs.

E-customs project is a complex package of measures that includes both the organisational improvements of the customs authorities and a number of new mutually connected customs information systems in all the EU Member States.

The new customs information systems will provide electronic data exchange between economic operators, customs authorities of the Member States, as well as other state institutions involved in border crossing and in customs clearance processes, thus creating paperless customs environment throughout the EU.
